Health insurers just say no to marijuana coverage

Those patients who use marijuana for medication purpose can take unwanted hit. It is said that insurers do not cover treatment that has cost of $1000 every month. Basically, marijuana is supposed to be best drug for augmenting appetite, reducing pain and lessening seizures. Despite this, most of the insurance companies do not give it coverage due to legal issues.

It goes without saying that more than 20 states have already approved marijuana for medical use. It is said that this drug is not allowed federally and most of the states reckon it as illegal. On the other hand, U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also declared this drug as potentially harmful for the patients. However, it has not been approved by FDA.

Actually, most of the insurance companies do not cover such treatments which are not approved by the FDA. Experts hold the opinion that “the insurance companies do not want to create troubles for their business however they won’t cover the drug for few years”.

Besides, spokeswoman for America’s Health Insurance Plans Susan Pisano said that “insurers do not know that whether marijuana is safe for medical use or not”. She further said that “This drug is likely to be abused however researchers need to take approval from FDA to investigate it”.

Apart from this, the current classification of the drug does not allow physicians to study or prescribe it. This drug can be used for various ailments. Sources claim that even FDA approves the drug there is no guarantee that insurers will cover it.

Last but not the least, executive director of the nonprofit National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws Allen St. Pierre claims that insurers will cover the vaporized form of marijuana drug and this is going to happen after 2016 presidential elections.
